Club Skating Programs

.

There are two programs in CanPowerSkate; Pre-PowerSkate and

PowerSkate.  Full hockey equipment is required for both programs.

Pre-PowerSkate is an introductory program is for future hockey players geared to

children approximately 4-6 years of age, who can stand up on skates and

move forward (shuffle, walk or glide) who may not be ready for

CanPowerSkate Level 1. It is designed to teach basic skating skills and

technique in a power skating specific environment. A progressive format is

presented in 3 levels; A, B, and C. Focus is on the basic fundamentals

including balance skills forward and backward skating, stopping, turning

and agility skills. Awards are given to encourage participation and

motivate skaters.

PowerSkate is an action-packed, high energy instructional program

geared to hockey and ringuette skaters aged approximately six or older

who already have basic forward and backward skating skills. The program

focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills,

techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that

emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations. Power Skate

provides an alternative to figure skating and is an excellent complement for

those athletes playing on hockey or ringuette teams. Its unique skill award

program provides incentives and motivation for skaters to continue to

achieve.

StarSkate 1 is for skaters who have passed at least the 5th CanSkate

level and wish to learn to figure skate who have not passed any complete

Preliminary level test.  Private lesson are highly recommended. To obtain

a private coach for you or your child see Coleen Matheson for a list of

coaches.

StarSkate 2 consists of the following levels in dance, skating skills and

freeskating; Preliminary, Junior Bronze, Senior Bronze, Junior Silver,

Senior Silver, Gold and Interpretive Freeskate levels; Introductory,

Bronze, Silver and Gold. Skaters must have passed at least one

complete Preliminary test for this session. A private coach is a must. If

you don’t have a coach see Coleen Matheson and she will arrange for

you to have one.

Both StarSkate programs welcome skaters of all ages who meet the

requirements. Warm up sweaters and/or jackets are a good idea as

everyone feels cold when first stepping in to our rink. One size fits all

gloves are the best for freedom of movement while keeping hands warm.

Competitive skaters may sign up for open sessions.

Call Coleen Matheson at 519-982-8292 or see her at the rink.

Canskate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program,

designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up

for CanSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun,

participation and basic skill development. You will earn badges

and other incentives as you learn fundamental skating skills.

Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP

certified professional coach. Professional coaches are

assisted by trained Program Assistants.
